Mass Communications 1st Class Kathryn E. Holm enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and she graduated from basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois in April 2009. After completing basic training, Kathryn reported to the Defense  Information School, at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, where she became a Mass Communications Specialist and learned “how to tell the Navy’s story.”

Kathryn reported to her first duty assignment with the USS Constitution, at Charlestown Navy Yard, Charlestown, Mass., where she was the Deputy Public Affairs Officer, Social Media Director and Webmaster.

In 2012 she reported to the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the “Blue Angels,” at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. While at the Blue Angels, she performed many duties to include: Social Media Director, VIP Flight Coordinator, photojournalist, graphic designer, and public affairs specialist.

Following her tour at the Blue Angels she went back to the Defense Information School as an Instructor, where she taught more than 100 accession level Navy Basic Mass Communication Specialist Course students in video-journalism and photojournalism yearly.

After her instructor tour, Kathryn was assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon as one of three Photojournalists to Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis. Today, she is a Military Visual Journalism student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University.
