Fitness Preparation

To make the transition into ROTC, you may need to begin preparing yourself by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Develop a fitness conditioning plan to prime yourself for AFROTC Physical Training (PT) sessions.

All cadets are expected to pass the Air Force Fitness Assessment (FA), which consists of: a 1.5 mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, height and weight measurements, and an abdominal circumference measurement.

Class Selection and Registration

All cadets are required to register for both an Aerospace Science (AS) academic class and Leadership Laboratory (LLAB).  This can be completed using Syracuse University’s online student portal, MySlice.  There are options to take the courses for credit or not for credit.  If you attend one of our cross-town schools do not register for the for credit options to avoid SU tuition and fees being applied.

Your Air Force uniforms will be issued, at no cost. Prior to being issued uniforms, all new cadets wear standardized, appropriate civilian attire to all official AFROTC events. This consists of the following for both men and women:

  • Dark blue collared polo shirt (no obvious logos or print on them)
  • White V-neck t-shirt worn underneath the dark blue polo
  • Khaki pants
  • Black or brown belt
  • Closed-toed shoes that are NOT sneakers (i.e. comfortable dress shoes)
  • All cadets should also be within Air Force grooming standards, per the Dress and Appearance Manual (AFI 36-2903)

During NSOP, any business casual attire (khakis, polo or button-down) will be appropriate. During physical training, cadets wear appropriate athletic attire (no obscene or offensive graphics) until Physical Training Gear is issued.
