Hometown Hero: Savion Pollard

United States Navy veteran and Syracuse University student veteran Savion Pollard was born and raised in Queens, New York. Savion graduated from the High School for Construction Trades, Engineering, and Architecture (CTEA) in 2013, and attended CUNY City College and CUNY York College, studying to become an accountant.

Savion enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 2013, completing Navy Bootcamp at the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois. After bootcamp, Savion became a Nuclear Electronics Technician and trained for a year in Charleston, South Carolina on reactor theory and electronics systems maintenance and operations. Following his training, Savion became an instructor at the Nuclear Power Training Unit in Ballston Spa, New York, making his biggest Navy impact by training 130 sailors. In 2017, he was stationed in Newport News, Virginia on the Pre-Commissioned Unit (PCU) Montana, a nuclear submarine that was under construction. Savion married his wife, Enesa, in May 2021 and served onboard the Montana until is separation in December 2021 as a Petty Officer First Class.

After serving eight honorable years in the Navy, Savion arrived at Syracuse University in 2022 where he is a senior in College of Engineering and Computer Science majoring in electrical engineering and minoring in computer science. He also serves the student veteran community on campus as the Student Veteran Organization (SVO) treasurer. Savion continues to serve the Syracuse community as a volunteer youth mentor through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program. In 2023, Savion was selected as Micron Technology’s first Central New York hire.
