Hometown Hero: Tyler Slavicek

Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Tyler C. Slavicek grew up in Southwest Michigan in the town of Bridgman. He has always had a passion for playing soccer, captaining his high school varsity soccer team, and playing for the Lake Michigan Community College Red Hawks. Tyler has continued to be involved with the sport by playing for the Navy and as a varsity soccer coach for Greenbrier Christian Academy in Virginia.

Tyler enlisted in the US Navy in October 2020. He was awarded as the Honor Recruit during Basic Training and was meritoriously promoted to Seaman. After graduating from Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended A-School (job specialty training) at Defense Information School, Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.

MC2 Tyler Slavicek was assigned to his first duty station with the pre-commissioning unit, John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). During his time there, Tyler’s proudest achievement was helping to build its media department from the ground up. Additionally, he was the president of the Second-Class Petty Officer Association and the Public Affairs Officer of the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions.

Tyler has since deployed with the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) to support military flight operations and joint naval exercises. He has earned several awards for his service, including the National Defense Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal. In 2024, Tyler married is wife, Hannah Crandall.

MC2 Slavicek is honored to have been accepted into Syracuse University’s Military Visual Journalism Program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. While at Newhouse, Tyler be taking graphic design courses over the next two semesters before returning to the fleet to continue his service and pass on the skills and education that he receives.
