Hometown Hero: Rebecca King

U.S. Army Second Lieutenant Rebecca King was born in Huntsville, Alabama and calls Madison, Alabama home. Rebecca began her college and military career in August 2020, at Valley Forge Military College in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

While attending Valley Forge Military College, Second Lieutenant King enrolled in the United States Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) and joined the Army National Guard in October 2020. She graduated from Valley Forge Military College in May 2022 with an associate degree in engineering and physical sciences and was her class Valedictorian. She was also commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Army upon her graduation.

During her career so far, Rebecca has been a member of both the Pennsylvania and New York Army National Guard. One of the most defining moments in her military career came when she earned her first challenge coin. Rebecca’s exemplary leadership during an annual training exercise resulted in her selection to be recognized above all other members of her unit. The coin now serves as a constant reminder to strive for excellence in everything she does.

Second Lieutenant King transitioned to Syracuse University in August 2022 where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology while simultaneously continuing her service in the New York Army National Guard with 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery Regiment.

At Syracuse University, she has taken on leadership roles across campus including, Secretary of the Club Swim Team, a member of the Professional STEM Sorority Alpha Omega Epsilon and the Master Fitness Trainer for her cohort of Second Lieutenants. Second Lieutenant King will complete her degree in May 2024 and enter the active-duty component of the United States Army as a field artillery officer.
